Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal

Pontywaun Bridge Relining Works

Project: Relining of Pontywaun Canal Section in NP11 7EB Powys

Client: Kier Major Contracts for Caerphilly County Borough Council

Summary: Supply and installation of 10,960m² Landflex PVC120AP 1.20mm geomembrane and 21,920m² of Landflex G6000CBR protective geotextile underlay and overlay to canal Phases 3 & 4 located to either side of Pontywaun Bridge with the material anchor or termination by means of steel hoops, water bar, battening, concrete block ballasted or an anchor trench as fixing method was dependent upon substrate or structure type in that canal section

  • Highly robust & resilient materials required due to waterway traffic
  • Materials as specified by Caerphilly Borough County Council and recommended by CRT
  • Landlfex PVC120AP has been successfully installed as a tried and tested geomembrane solution due to its durability and suitability in multiple canal projects throughout the United Kingdom over many years.

Challenges: Site entry offered restricted delivery vehicle access with very limited storage. Adverse weather conditions affecting dewatering with stoppages awaiting the block ballast system to be installed by others above the lining material. Phase 4 canal section was especially challenging regards material deployment due to the remote location with steep embankment and drop off to the tow path side.

Our Solution: Landflex PVC120AP has high strength and highly flexible properties and able to accommodate any differential settlement that may occur as the materials yield point is 300% in every direction. PVC120AP geomembrane panels were prefabricated within our Billericay factory based on dimensions per site section prior to palletised and then shipped for deployment to site specific locations.

Butek Landline’s rate of progress was reliant upon the groundworker or concrete block installer, our trained technicians were able to leapfrog between sections as bespoke panel sections thus streamlining our installation process.

Contract Period: November 2021 – March 2022

Main Contractor Comment

On behalf of myself and Kier I would like to thank Butek Landline for the recent job that was completed for us in South Wales on the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal. Its not been the easiest of jobs due to challenging weather conditions but Butek have responded to our every need, if that be on site doing the work or on the end of a phone with advice. We look forward to working with you on future projects, thanks again.
